 Information
Welcome to this site, here you can find the Radio One Essential Mix archives, ever since 1993 when it first broadcasted, up until today, and for the future. In time there will be features added for "artist in residence" which will be a profile of a DJ/Producer we will pick each month, and give you information about them and what they are doing now.

The page is updated by atleast a few people, so it is always up to date.

Beginning is very good superb climax till min 45 where it goes off - after 60 minutes too monotonous

This is probably the best Oakey essential mix.

'Goa' was groundbreaking but for me the stuff Oakey was playing in 98/99 was top notch and this set showcases the man at the top of his game!

It's got all the oakey moments:
- the briilliant trancey opener (Nalin & Kane - "Open Your Eyes"); true to form oakey lets us know who's arrived. None of this funky/chunky build up stuff.
- The Full-on trance in the middle (again in this case 09. Nalin & Kane - Open Your Eyes (El Barco Para Es Vedra Mix))
-The subdued mid-section (The Auranaut then Brainchild)
-The OMG "what the fuck is this" moment (Wonky vs. Radiohead)
-The brand new tunes everyone else will be playing a year later (first outings for 'Bullet in the gun', 'Just another day' and of course 'Street spirit')

Good things don't last forever though; of course he's never going to play stuff like this again but if he did this set would seem less special.

BTW I also think this is better than the Lotherton Hall set even though it got voted best set of 1999 in mixmag or something.

How anyone cane give this a 10 is well beyond me, the tracklisting looked promising but the mix itself failed to deliver on many levels, I found it boring mostly.

That 9th track has acquired legendary status. Apparetly oakie himself has no idea what it is.

with Superock. This reminds me a little of the late eighties early nineties mixes i used to listen to. (Bad Boy Bill and Sasha spun this!!) Nice to see some change on the Essential mix...

dj_sisco writes: not the best [ 2006-12-31 - Trentemoller, Essential Mix Of The Year ]
not the best, but this year there where poor mixes.so in comparition is not too bad.prefer trentemoller as a producer than a dj.

 adcashmo writes: [ 2000-12-03 - Mauro Picotto ]
I agree with spoons: Picotto played much harder and darker live around that time (can't comment on the present). You've got to respect tracks like Ian Void's "The Rascall" though - eerily creepy

i was here for this; it was the hottest day of 2000 - perfect festival.

This mix is good but he played for an hour before the essential mix started and played some brilliant melodic trance (much more gatecrasher-y).

Shame Radio1 couldn't have aired the whole set.

Paul Oakenfold's set was also blinding (U2: "Beautiful Day" Radiohead: "Street Spirit" and Solar Stone: "Seven Cities"!!!!!!!) this too was overlooked by radio 1.......can't have everything though

I'm sure I remember the mixing being really crap between "Live at the Crystal Palace" and "JMJ", or maybe the beats were in time but the beats on each track were so different it sounded shit.....?

This hasn't been mentioned yet actually:

This mix was broadcast from Gatecrasher's 2000GC millennium eve event at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield.

I walked in to the arena just as this was starting; the sirens in the first track are chilling and lead perfectly into "dark & long".

I like this mix more and more with every listen partly because i was there but mainly because of how much more I come to realise the DJ is one-of-a-kind.

Sasha's is a DJ with a seemingly god-like ability to select just the right track to follow from the last track and at just the right moment.

Heaven Scent is the real "moment" in this mix and it was obviously intentional; Sasha remixed the track especially for this set and did it in such a way that you don't realise what it is until the main melody comes in........I WAS JUMPING ABOUT LIKE A LOON IN THE STADIUM...being careful not to spill my 4 quid can of stella (one of 2 downsides to this night, the secind of which was the 107 quid entry fee)
