Kaizyn writes: Typical trance set.. [ 2002-05-05 - Pete Tong @ Coachella Festival, California ]
Pete shows us he can put on a decent set with little effort. Don't bother getting this one if you are looking for anything exciting or innovative. However, if you are looking for a progressive set you've not yet heard, this one is ok.

seeker writes: didn't do much for me [ 2002-05-26 - Greg Vickers ]
i had thought this would be harder and techier, based on the fact that he's the resident at Sankey's Soap for Tribal Sessions, which is the night that Richie Hawtin's mix from last April (2001) was recorded at. alas, this was not the case.

i listened to the first hour of slow chugging tech-house and before i completely lost interest. the mixing seemed fine, but the tunes just didn't grab me.

why is it that modern tech-house isn't as good as either techno or house? it's a genre that has so much potential... check out Terry Francis' '98 mix to see what i mean.

i won't rate this since i didn't listen to the whole thing.

 Styarc writes: i agree [ 2002-05-19 - Derrick Carter ]
I havent had to chance to hear the full Derrick Carter mix, but I agree with seeker. Seems to have a lot more going for it than the Roger Sanchez mix.

matrix writes: I agree - probably my favourite EM. [ 1995-09-03 - John Digweed ]
this is the mix that got me into Essential Mixes in the first place. Fantastic stuff.

 seeker writes: a good one [ 2002-05-19 - Derrick Carter ]
nothing really surprising here. carter gives what you'd expect: funky house with some vocal bits. a little bit deep, but never losing the pace. better than the roger sanchez mix a couple of weeks ago.

nice summertime house music.

Origen writes: good chit. [ 2002-05-19 - Derrick Carter ]
Derrick Carter didn't disappoint with this one. Good chicago house style... quality tune selection (with the exception of the played out 'Lazy'.. how many times will this make it on the E-mix??)

Glad to hear some quality U.S. house on Radio 1.

 seeker writes: recently got an mp3 [ 1994-07-23 - Moby ]
i had been looking casually for this mix for a long time -- roughly 2 years. i finally got it, and it was really worth the wait.

the sound is very very funky, combining breaks/techno/hip hop and house into a melange of tasty beats. moby is a pretty creative mixer as well, if not entirely smooth.

it's worth checking out if you like old school and moby.

seeker writes: disappointing [ 2002-03-24 - Donald Glaude (American Underground Special) ]
i expected something so much harder and funkier. some stand-out tunes, and a few neat mixes, but nothing compared to what he's done in the past.

 seeker writes: brilliant [ 1993-11-13 - Andrew Weatherall ]
when people talk about 'journeys' in music, this is what they mean. moves from ambient techno to acid stormers by the end.

weatherall is the man.

seeker writes: makes me smile [ 1996-10-27 - Andrew Weatherall ]
just thinking about how good this mix is. tasteful techno and house on the deep tip. and it's andrew weatherall, so you know the mixing is top notch.

 seeker writes: wicked journey [ 1994-08-06 - Leftfield ]
very well mixed. moves through downtempo and reggae bits into some serious techno and acid.

completely classic.

seeker writes: by the way [ 1995-11-18 - Laurent Garnier ]
this tracklisting is wrong. the mix begins with Garnier's "Aquarius" and finishes with "Carlito's Way".

seeker writes: one of the best, ever. [ 1995-11-18 - Laurent Garnier ]
the first half-hour builds beautifully with dreamy techno and acid. the second half-hour gets nice and hard.

the 2nd half of the mix is a wild ride from hip hop through house and techno to drum and bass at the finale. too good to be true, but somehow it is.

the man is class, and he never loses the plot.

seeker writes: funky soul and soulful funk [ 1997-12-31 - David Holmes ]
nice one. very different from most of what you hear on the essential mix. a little too much scratching, perhaps. and the first hour is better than the second.

put in on at dinner parties.

seeker writes: this IS techno [ 1999-12-19 - Jim Masters ]
if you like techno, and you haven't heard this mix, you're really missing out. if you don't know techno, get this mix, you'll soon understand.

the first hour flows nicely through some old school stuff. great melodies, nice beats. the mix of new order is killer. builds nicely to the 'spastik' and 'flash' mix, which kicks it up a notch for the harder second hour.

i play this about once a week.

seeker writes: marvelously weird [ 2000-02-06 - William Orbit ]
put this one on and fuck with your friends' heads.
[ Posted on 2002-05-21 00:16:42 ] [email]

seeker writes: not his best [ 2000-01-30 - Laurent Garnier ]
but still better than most. garnier is class. he moves deftly through lots of styles of music, and communicates feeling really well.

like this? check out the '95 mix.

seeker writes: another great one [ 2000-04-16 - Leftfield ]
it's too bad they broke up - i could listen to mixes like this every week for the rest of my short life.

nicely blended, even including a couple of 'rock' tunes at the end.
[ Posted on 2002-05-21 00:13:38 ] [email]

seeker writes: perennial favourite [ 2000-11-05 - Christian Smith ]
this mix just rocks. sick sick techno tunes, blended together wonderfully.

the best part is the 'mix' 20 min or so in that sounds like a fuck up, but could very well be intentional. makes me smile every single time!
