rogue ldr writes: very weak for coldcut's standards
this mix is such a dissapointment. if this mix were done by any other dj, it'd be really good, but since it was done by coldcut, it's weak. these guys are much better than what this mix shows. the first 30 minutes or so were boring as hell. they were riding the "walk on the wild side" beat for close to 10 minutes. i wanted to kill myself. jon carter used the kenny dope "don dada" and the yard boy ten track much better in his "live at the social" mix a few years ago. the mix started to pick up around the 35-40 minute mark, then it got boring again. and why they dropped some of the tracks from their "journeys by dj" mix in their essential mix is beyond me...it's been 11 years since you dropped that mix, coldcut...i'm sure you could've found newer records to use. just dissapointing all-around. and i was really looking forward to this essential mix, too...sad. :'(

 KoolzAK1200 writes: Good /but salrightish...for them chapz
First off.
Yeh some of this mix was too overfamiliar.
Especially first half hour or so .....The Terrorist (accapella.....again? Christ!) + the Don Dadda routines / ATCQ & Mr Scruffs Ug was well ...just well too overfamiliar of Coldcut & indeed of strictly kev routines of past few years ....+ Eric B & Rakim -I Know You Got Soul Accapellas again?! + Sweet Tee ? BDP? again?....soz...classic hip hop , yes , but played to death , yes ...surely they could have / should have dug a bit deeper.
Having said that this was (if bit bizarely somewhat) Coldcuts first EVER essential mix on radio 1 so those not familiar with Coldcut or past solid steel radio mixes might have been blown away as of course it was all very nicely enough put together still .Dont get me wrong -even the first half hour or so typically well mixed ,blends , nice edits and plenty goin on ...but just too overfamiliar.
Later on some of the dancehall / raggae was niice (if again bit ...familiar) and doubles on the tempos typically great stuff ,,,plus ...despite me goin on about the familiarity of first half part of the mix it was actually really nice to hear Bola and indeed Junior Reed later on . Franz Ferdinands inclusion depsite its warped dubbed out inclusion was a bit too much for me...soz but theyre shite no matter what cha do with it....but of course there was plenty of niiice blends along the way , nice edits , nice spoken word shannigans & reworkings + their phrasin of scratching even has come a long way bit (bit suprisingly!- have they got Pro X faders now ?... )
All in all its still a top mix and was good to hear them finally on an essential i was just a bit underwhelmed by some over-tried & tested trackselection along the way...still good tho

 CerealKiller writes:
First off I'm a big fan of Coldcut...some of their work on their Solid Steel sessions are permanent fixtures on my mp3 player wherever I go....their Blue Room Mix & Triple J Mix are all top notch...and this was a great 2 hour mix.

I do agree that they could have tried mixing things up a bit. Most of these tracks can be found in their other works, but it was still a great showing from them. The DJ work was top notch (as expected) and it was a fun mix.

Now if they would only do another E-Mix for their fans!
